This paper with 107 references reviews the latest advances of the preparation, characterization, novel properties and applications of nanowires. The preparation process and growth mechanism of nanowires using laser ablation and template are emphatically elaborated respectively. The novel properties of nanowires are also summarized, which include the unique electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In the mean time the prospects of future application is looked forward.
