Organic coating technique is an effective way to protect metals against corrosion and oxidation. Recently, the hydrophobicity of organic coatings has been deeply investigated in preparing self-cleaning surfaces. The application of organic coatings in the field of metallic materials is summarized, including the various methods of pre-treatments for metal surfaces, especially utilizing silane coupling agents. The hydrophobic theories of solid surfaces and the latest development in hydrophobic surfaces are also discussed. The prospects of organophobic coatings are put forward in the last part.
