The authors report the bacteriological study of 81 cases of simple, suppurative and perforated appendicitis in children(June, 1984-May, 1985)and the result of antibiotic treatment. The E. cell cultured were found to be sensitive to gentamycin and kanamycin. Becteroides fragilis were highly sensitive to metronidazole, rifampin and erythromycin. All the 41 cases of simple appendicitis received a 5-day routine therapy of metronidazole after appendectomy. The wounds all healed nicely. 40 cases of suppurative and perforated appendicitis received a 5-day therapy of metronidazole and gentamycin. Wounds in 38 cases healed up except two with infaction. No other complications were noticed, which proves that metronidazole is effective in preventing against anaerobic bacterial infection after appendectomy.
