A new triphenylamine-bridged Dispersed Red-1 derivative (DR1-TPA-DR1) designed for twophoton absorption was synthesized by the reaction of 5-(N, N-diphenylamino)benzene-1,3-dicarbaldehyde (DBD) and cyanoacetylated DR1 in the presence of piperidine. This material is highly soluble in many common organic solvents. The optical and two-photon absorption properties have been investigated by a variety of physical techniques, e. g. , UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies, and Z-scan technique as well. In contrast to the starting material DBD,covalent attachment of cyanoacetylated DR1 onto the triphenylamine gives rise to the decrease of the fluorescence life from 4.76 for DBD to 1.2 ns for DR1-TPA-DR1 due to the strong electron-withdrawing effect of cyanoacetylated DR1. The two-photon absorption cross-section of the resulting material is about 32 GM.
