The establishment methods of sediment quality guidelines can be roughly divided into two categories: one is based on the balance distribution relationship of contamination in the sediments and the other is based on the biological effects corresponding to pollutants of different concentrations in sediments. This paper lists several methods used commonly in these two categories for analysis and comparison. Due to its applicability and limitations of each method, a comprehensive analysis of each method is required according to characteristics of each method, and attention should be paid to the combination of various methods to create a reliable and widely used method and to establish quality guidelines suitable for China.
