The safety of lithium ion battery was increased as a result of adding of flame retardant additive in the electrolyte, which was a simple and useful technological method. This paper summarizes the current status of the flame retardant additives included organic phosphorus, organic fluoric and composite function. The mechanism of flame retardant was introduced simply. Finally, the development prospect of them in the future was predicted.
