Soave's operation was performed on 62 patients with Hirschsprung's disease in this hospital from 1975 to 1983.30 of them have been followed up for 2 to 8 years. The results and complications are analysed.Operative mortality was 3.2%.Anal function was excellent in 40%;good in 33.3% and fair in 26.7%.Accurate one-stage fixation between anal canal and proximal colon is stressed to eliminate leakage along the line of anastomosis;the most serious complication.4 cases developed abscess between the rectal wall and the proximal colon;3 of which received successful drainage and one died. The authors point out the importance of postoperative dilatations to overcome spasm of the sphincter ani Internus. In addition;various factors influencing anal function;some modifications in the operative technique as well as prevention and treatment of complications were also discussed based on the authors' clinical experience.
