This paper reports 22 newborn cases of incarcerated inguinal hernia from 1972 to 1981.7 were mis-diagnosed at admission,but all were correctly diagnosed several hours later.4 early cases were treated by local gentle massage under sedatives.18 were operated on,and 7 cases of intestinal gangrene and 2 cases of testicular gangrene were found.All patients recovered uneventfully.The methods of diagnosis of an incarcerated inguinal hernia including local examination,rectal exa mination and diagnostic needling were discu ssed in detail.The authors also emphasized the importance of local exploratory incision
in doubtful cases.
