PBL教学模式注重培养学生自主学习的能力，发展高层次的思维技能以及解决问题的能力：通过对美术史论教学目的及美术史论教学中存在的问题分析，提出了在美术史论教学中应用PBL教学模式的对策，以解决美术史论教学中存在的问题。PBL教学模式与当前美术史论课程改革的趋势比较一致，对革新传统的美术史论教学模式具有重要的借鉴意义。
