A new simplified analytical method is proposed to evaluate the crashworthiness of side structure of inland double-hull tankers. The failure modes and their progressive collapse behaviour of the side structure collided by a bulbous bow are described in detail. Considering the residual strength against the crashworthiness after the outer shell fracture,the curve of collision force versus penetration depth is plotted and compared to the FEM result. The comparison shows that the simplified analytical method is able to predict the structure damage of the double-hull in a reasonable manner, and thus can be used to evaluate the crashworthiness of the structure in ship design.
