Sex and the City is an American cable television and film series. Set in New York City, the show focused on four white American women who discuss their sexual desires and fantasies, and their travels and love. It has become such an extraordinary cultural landmark since it was the first television show to portray the psychological shift made by women since the sexually liberating women' s movement. Therefore, it has been analyzed by feminists both as an example of progress in women's rights and life options. The four single, thirty-to-forty something central characters seemed like sexually liberated, glamorous as symbols of modern femininity who didn't need men for financial stability or companionship. However, I think the feminism somebody found in the series is fake or at least lopsided. In this essay, I will present a feminist review of Sex and theCity based on the theory of "visual pleasure" from Laura Mulvey and "mirror stage" from Jacque Lacan.
