This paper reviews forward osmosis (FO), a new-emerging technology, with respect to the principle and factors facilitating and affecting FO membrane separation, as well as the application, both potential and being developed to wastewater treatment and water purification such as seawater desalination. Status quo and future trend of the research of FO technology are reviewed as well.
