“天下文章，其出于桐城乎!”这是姚鼐在《刘海峰先生八十寿序》中转引程晋芳、周永年二人的一句话，程、周二人或为戏言，姚鼐却借来为自己创建桐城派张目。后来曾国藩在《欧阳生文集序》中接着这句话后，更是宣称“由是学者多归向桐城，号铜城派’，犹前世所称江西诗派者也。”姚、曾二人的序文作为为桐城派树旗和扬旗的宣言，充分体现了桐城派在创立和发展过程中的自觉意识，对桐城派的形成和流播发挥了重要作用。
“천하문장，기출우동성호!”저시요내재《류해봉선생팔십수서》중전인정진방、주영년이인적일구화，정、주이인혹위희언，요내각차래위자기창건동성파장목。후래증국번재《구양생문집서》중접착저구화후，경시선칭“유시학자다귀향동성，호동성파’，유전세소칭강서시파자야。”요、증이인적서문작위위동성파수기화양기적선언，충분체현료동성파재창립화발전과정중적자각의식，대동성파적형성화류파발휘료중요작용。
Cheng Jinfang and Zhou Yongnian＇s words ＂All the great articles are composed by writers of Tongcheng School! ＂ were quoted in Yao Nai＇s Preface to Mr. Liu Haifeng＇s Eightieth Birthday. Although Cheng and Zhou might say that jokingly,Yao took it seriously to highlight Tongcheng School. After their words, Zeng Guofan, in his Preface to the ColZected Works bY Mr. Ouyang, proclaimed that ＂Those who incline to the Tongcheng writing style belong to Tongcheng School, like the former Jiangxi Poetic School. The prefaces by Yao and Zeng were taken as the proclamation and publicity of Tongcheng School, which fully manifested their self-consciousness in founding and promoting their school. The self-consciousness in turn played an essential role in the establishment and publicity of Tongcheng School.
