Based on the data observed on the coastal areas of Guangdong, the law of wind velocity varying with altitude is studied, and the characteristics of wind velocity and wind direction are analyzed, the main results are as follow: 1) The wind velocity in winter and spring are smaller than that in summer and autumn. But at the same time, the power exponent m in winter and spring are larger than that in summer and autumn. For daily variation the value of m at daytime is smaller than that at night. 2) The power law of wind profile is better than logarithmic law of wind profile, and is more applicable to coastal areas. The parameter of wind velocity varying with altitude calculated according to the power law is smaller than that of the stipulated standards. 3) The area of 2.7 km in width along coastline is rich in wind energy resource, and is an important area where wind energy can be exploited in Guangdong.
