2008年5月12日14时28分，四川阿坝藏族羌族自治州境内的汶川县（31°N，103．4°E）发生了里氏8．0级浅源地震。震区范围长240km，宽30km，等震线呈长椭圆形，长轴为北东向，震中烈度约为10度，深度为12～19km。震区涉及四川绵阳市北川，德阳、汶川，成都、都江堰、广元、重庆以及甘肃、云南、陕西、河南等地区。除了吉林、黑龙江和新疆地区外，全国都有震感。在北川、汶川等多地区出现次生灾害。地震的发震构造是龙门山构遣带中央断裂带。
2008년5월12일14시28분，사천아패장족강족자치주경내적문천현（31°N，103．4°E）발생료리씨8．0급천원지진。진구범위장240km，관30km，등진선정장타원형，장축위북동향，진중열도약위10도，심도위12～19km。진구섭급사천면양시북천，덕양、문천，성도、도강언、엄원、중경이급감숙、운남、협서、하남등지구。제료길림、흑룡강화신강지구외，전국도유진감。재북천、문천등다지구출현차생재해。지진적발진구조시룡문산구견대중앙단렬대。
At 2：28 p.m. on May 12, 2008, the Great Wenchuan Earthquake happened, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province （31°N, 103.4°E） at Wenehuan County, This Earthquake of magnitude 8.0 produced an earthquake zone 240kin long and 30km wide. The isoseismal lines are of long ellipse, and its long axis trends the NE-direction. The epicenter intensity is about 10 degrees, and the hypocenter is of 12-19kin depth, which should belong to a kind of shallow earthquakes. The Earthquake zones are involved in Beichuan, Deyang, Wenchuan, Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Guangyuan areas in Sichuan Province, and Chongqing, Gansu, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Henan and other regions. Except for Jilin, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang, the people in the China had got the tremble felt. Most of the buildings had been damaged in Beichuan and Wenchuan, and lots of secondary disasters had occurred in various regions. The seismogenic structure is the central Longmen Shah fault zone, also called the Beiehuan-Yingxiu fault active zone.
