A special lattice Boltzmann model with 2-bit lattice was developed to solve the red-and-green light model for traffic flows. The maximum principle and the stability were proved. The model was verified by the test example. Excellent agreement was obtained between numerical predictions and the analytical solutions based on the discontinuous-solution theory. The careful numerical study indicates the computational efficiency and stability of the lattice Boltzmann method for the multi-discontinuous traffic flow problem.
