An experimental technique for testing the underwater towed systemin a model ship towing tank with sensor measurements is proposed and the hydrodynamic behaviours of a two-part underwater towed system with such a technique are demonstrated. The experimental results shows that optimal results of an underwater towed system test conducted in a model ship towingtank can be achieved with the technique. The method provides an ideal means for laboratory experiments on an underwater towed system. The two-part towing is an easy and cost-effect way to maintain an underwater towed vehicle stable in waves. It can decouple surface towing point motions from the towed vehicle and ensure the vehicle stable under severe ocean environments. This is a new type of underwater towed system which deserves further development.
