With advantages of high concentration, rapid settling velocity, strong ability to withstand shock loading, and capacity of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal, aerobic granular sludge has become one of the hot research issues in the field of wastewater treatment. The recent research progress in treatment of real municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater by aerobic granular sludge as well as in development and engineering application of aerobic granular sludge technology are introduced. The treatment technology based on aerobic granular sludge has good application prospect in upgrading and reconstruction of wastewater treatment facilities and in design of new processes.
