Ischemic mitral regurgitation, the mitral insufficiency caused by structural and functional disorders of the left ventricle after myocardial infarction, is a common complication of coronary artery disease. Leaflet tethering and tenting, annular deformation and other mechanisms jointly contribute to ischemic mitral regurgitation. Echocardiography allows not only the estimation of the severity of mitral regurgitation, but also the structural and functional changes of leaflets, annulus, chordae tendineae and papillary muscle. Thus, echocardiography was the method of choice in diagnosis and follow-up of ischemic mitral regurgitation.
