在明代科举事业的推动下,茅坤的古文评点本在明代十分盛行,其《史记抄》、《唐宋八大家文钞》皆广受好评。但茅坤的这些评点本并非仅为八股创作而产生,其编选过程及编选宗旨皆体现了茅坤为贯彻＂文以明道＂思想的复古志向。茅坤评点的体例、内容等呈现出＂法＂与＂意＂相统一的特征,使他超越了以往评点家,促成了明代古文评点的空前兴盛。

재명대과거사업적추동하,모곤적고문평점본재명대십분성행,기《사기초》、《당송팔대가문초》개엄수호평。단모곤적저사평점본병비부위팔고창작이산생,기편선과정급편선종지개체현료모곤위관철＂문이명도＂사상적복고지향。모곤평점적체례、내용등정현출＂법＂여＂의＂상통일적특정,사타초월료이왕평점가,촉성료명대고문평점적공전흥성。
In the promotion of the Ming Dynasty＇s Imperial Examination,Mao Kun＇s classical commentaries were very popular in the Ming Dynasty,His ＂The Selections of the Historical Records＂ and ＂The Prose Selections of Eight Masters in Tang and Song Dynasty＂ were well received.But these commentaries of Mao Kun,which would not only Generated for the eight-legged essay writing,reflected Mao Kun＇s Retro ambition of ＂writing for Dao＂ from their Compilation process and Purpose.Mao Kun＇s commentaries showed the characteristics of ＂law＂ and ＂meaning＂ unity,which made him beyond the previous Comments,Contributed to the unprecedented prosperity of the Classical Commentaries in the Ming Dynasty.
