法律英语具有七大特征:1)准确性与模糊性相结合,2)语言风格正式客观,3)大量借用拉丁语和法语词汇,4)喜用古英语词汇,5)运用具有特定法律舍义的普通词汇和意义明确的专门法律英语词汇,6)句法结构冗长复杂,7)经常使用被动语态、名词性结构及虚拟语气.法律英语汉译应遵循三步骤:理解、表达和检验.法律英语汉译应遵循五原则:使用正式词汇,准确性,简洁性,用语一致性及使用法律术语.结论是:法律英语翻译者须熟悉英美法和中国法,精通英中两种语言,牢记法律英语的七大特征,遵循三个步骤,坚持五大原则.

Legal English is found to possess seven features:1) combining precision with vagueness, 2) formal and objective language style, 3)extensively borrowing words from Latin and French, 4) preferring to use archaisms, 5) using ordinary words with a specific and totally different meaning in law and words peculiar to legal English with a definite meaning in law, 6) lengthy and complex syntactical structures and 7) frequent use of passive voice, nominal constructions as well as subjunctive mood. The three steps for translating legal English into Chinese are understanding, expression and examination. Five principles should be followed when a translator translates legal English into Chinese-the principle of using formal words and expressions, the principle of preciseness, the principle of conciseness, the principle of term consistency and the principle of using legal terms. The conclusion is that when translating legal English into Chinese, a qualified translator should be knowledgeable in Anglo-American law and Chinese law as well as proficient in English and Chinese languages, bear m mind the seven features of legal English, follow the three steps and adhere to the five translation principles.
