15 cases of thyroid carcinoma were treated from 1964 to 1981.There were 9 males (60%) and 6 females (40%).9 patients aged 11-14,with the youngest being 5 and the oldest 14.Only in one case.the tumour invaded and pressed upon trachea,causing dyspnea.In 12 cases (80%),the involvement of cervical lymph nodes was noticed.12 cases were diagnosed as pappilary adenocarcinoma and 3 as follicular carcinoma.
Treatment and results:Radical thyroidectomy combined with neck dissection was performed on 9 patients,7 of whom(77%) survived over 5 yrs.Total thyroidectomy on 2 with one remaining in good health for 5 yrs after operation.Subtotal thyroidectomy on one who survived over 5 yrs.Excisions of either supercervical or parotid metastasis lymph nodes were performed on 2,who survived for 14 and 15 yrs.Trachostomy on one who has been living for 11 yrs with the carcinoma.Routine thyroxin was prescribed for all the patients.Only one received radiotherapy postoperatively.5 years survival rate is 100%,with 4 still having thes carcinoma.No death has been reported for the others who have been treated less than 5 yrs.
