Typical earthquake damage to frame structures in 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake were investigated. Based on the analysis of damage characteristics, this paper summarizes the damage rules and lessons learnt from the mega-earthquake. Seismic principles, key problems, and design suggestions to improve the earthquake-resistant performance of the frame structures are also proposed. It is concluded that the expected seismic design objectives of the frame structures can be achieved provided that seismic concepts, structural details, design requirements, and construction quality are accurately performed.
