This paper begins with a comparison of the traditional Chinese language classroom with the newstyle classroom which emphasizes learner autonomy. It describes the differences between them and provides as an example the results of an empirical investigation of learner autonomy conducted by the Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. These show that the use of modern methods of learner autonomy fosters greater learning efficiency and effectiveness, and promotes improvement in the quality of both learning and teaching.
