哈代以其"爱玛组诗"颠覆了英国传统挽歌。鬼魂意象在"爱玛组诗"中频现,而其诗歌功能迥异。鬼魂或是哈代直接抒情的对象,或是哈代追忆往昔的载体,抑或是阐释爱玛内心独白的视角。正是鬼魂的意象使得哈代实现了在过去、现在和未来之间的时空穿梭,把爱玛组诗的主题从个性化的爱情推及人类永恒爱情的境界。同时,鬼魂意象是研究哈代诗歌现代性的切入点之一。

Thomas Hardy,with his "Poems of 1912—1913",transcends the elegiac tradition in British literature.The ghost image occurs frequently in this group of poems and plays variously different poetic functions,including the person to whom Hardy directly sings his elegy,a trigger of Hardy's recalling his past with Emma,or a perspective to elucidate Emma's monologue from the other world.It is the ghost image that helps Hardy shuttle through the past,the present and the future and crystallizes Hardy's individual love into human being's eternal emotion.Meanwhile,the ghost image is also a viewpoint of Hardy's poetry study on modernity.
