Pervasive computing brings a new era of computing. It is an outcome of mobile computing, embedded system and software engineering. Based on the ZigBee and GPRS technologies, this paper introduces one automatic meter reading system (AMRS). It carries out the local data acquisition by ZigBee and long - distance transmission by GPRS. The system structure and implementation technologies are specifically analyzed. Then some schemes are proposed to extend this system to a pervasive computing paradigm.
