Meanwhile the interest in Europe in hydroformed tubes, extrusions and sheet metals has become relative. The market for hydroformed products is still slightly growing, but mainly for work pieces from quantity production for the automotive industry as well as for highly individual niche products. Today light weight production, higher functional integration of new work pieces and increasing design experience regarding utilisation of hydroformed single parts are influencing the development of new hydroforming technologies. Hydroformed open and closed cross sectional aluminium extrusions are on trial now regarding their specific profitability. Moreover hydroforming of car panels for niche vehicles is increasingly discussed on this background. The profitability thereby has to be considered along with the entire process chain of semi-finished parts, the forming process itself until the finished joined parts. There is need for action in order to increase the functional integration of hydroforming tools regarding the semi-finished tubes respectively semi-finished sheet metal blanks. This paper presents solutions for tool design and functional integration for hydroforming tubes. Furthermore the profitability of IHP processes is demonstrated.
