The phenomenon that microorganisms position themselves in a niche is as cell aggregation had been observed in most of the natural environments. When microorganism cells aggregate together, specific extracellular matrix synthesis can be triggered for building the architecture of the cell assem- blages. Within a cellular aggregate, members of these communities can also develop into distinct phe-notypes to play different roles or undergo different fates. In addition, microbial cells with different metabolic capabilities and phenotypes can communicate with each other to coordinate their behaviors All these collective activities can lead to higher resistant capabilities to the environmental adversities and promote the adaptabilities of microorganisms. The biochemical and molecular mechanisms that had been proposed for microorganism aggregation to withstand adversities are reviewed, as well discussed is the sophistication of a once neglected kind of community, especially in its ecological and evolutionary aspects.
