书院是我国封建社会为适应科举考试需要而形成的集教育教学和学术研究于一体的独具特色的教育机构。保定莲池书院是第四任直隶总督李卫所创办的官立书院,其教育目标定位于为科举考试服务,从而造就了众多封建官僚,培养出一大批文人学者。但随着科举制的废除,书院制度推陈出新,提倡自由讲学,注重学生自学能力的培养,重视学术交流与争鸣,为我国现代教育制度的建立、现代教育的改革提供了一定的物质基础和精神资源。这些因素或成分不仅有教育历史价值,更有其超越时空限制在现代教育语境下的现实意义。而且在文化传播与人才培养、文化遗产保护、爱国主义教育、旅游文化资源开发中亦可发挥重要的支撑作用。

Shu Yuan（acadamy of classical learning） is a special educational institution in ancient China,which is a product of feudal im-perial competitive examination with the combining function of education and academy research.Lian Chi Shu Yuan（Lotus College） is an offi-cial one founded by Li Wei,the fourth Zhili Governor.With the end of serving for the imperial examination,it has fostered numerous feudal officers and scholars.With the abolishment of the imperial examination system,Lotus College put efforts to get rid of the stale and bring forth the fresh in order to encourage the students to learn by themselves and build up a favorable environment for academical exchange.All these laid the foudation for the modern educational revolution both physically and spiritually.These factors are valuable not only in the history field but al-so in the modern education.They will also contribute to the cultural transmission,personnel training,cultural heritage protection,education in patriotism,development of tourism,and so on.
