玄言诗虽然产生于正始时期,却经过了西晋时的寂寞。东晋士人的偏安心态和审美情趣的变化,是玄言诗发展的内在动因;东晋高层决策者的倡导、爱好是玄言诗发展的重要条件。同时,佛教的传入、佛教般若学对东晋玄学的渗透等都与东晋玄言诗的发展大有关系。以体悟玄理(包涵老庄玄学和佛学理论)、剖析玄学义理为宗旨的魏晋玄言诗,却并不都“淡乎寡味”;后来的诗人将吟诵山水引入玄言诗中,从而使其获得新的生命力,并最终发展成为全新的山水诗。

현언시수연산생우정시시기,각경과료서진시적적막。동진사인적편안심태화심미정취적변화,시현언시발전적내재동인;동진고층결책자적창도、애호시현언시발전적중요조건。동시,불교적전입、불교반약학대동진현학적삼투등도여동진현언시적발전대유관계。이체오현리(포함로장현학화불학이론)、부석현학의리위종지적위진현언시,각병불도“담호과미”;후래적시인장음송산수인입현언시중,종이사기획득신적생명력,병최종발전성위전신적산수시。
Metaphysical poetry came into being in the Zhengshi Period (240-249), and began to develop during the change in the Eastern Jin Dynasty scholars' content attitude and aesthetic taste. And the advocating and love are the two important conditions for the development of the metaphysical poetry. Moreover, the introduction of Buddhism also played a big role. Later, some landscape poems appeared in this poetic school.
