In the late Qing Dynasty, the "Fictional Revolution" was propelled by Liang Qichao and others, which tremendously promoted the creation of literary works, especially novels, in newspapers and other media. During this period, a considerable number of original novels and translated novels flourished. Among these, novels translated from Japanese', particularly in science fiction and detective fiction, were regarded as a brand new genre compared with traditional Chinese novels, and therefore became popular. Influenced by this New Fiction, scientific elements became more highly valued during the creation and translation of popular fiction. This was because the scientific elements corresponded with the contemporary call of "Enlightening the Masses" and the trend of increasing scientific knowledge. Meanwhile, these scientific elements had effects on resisting the feudalism of "Royal Power", and fulfilling the curiosity and thirst for knowledge among readers. The Japanese author, Shunro Oshikawa (1876-1914), was one of the most important original authors in the late Qing Dynasty. This paper takes as an example Shunro' s original novel Monsters in Tower and the translation Devil's Hole by the chief editor of a famous fiction magazine Fiction Woods. By analyzing the transference between original text and translation text, this paper tries to point out the characteristics of scientific discourse, to capture the objective ecological image of popular novels in the late Qing Dynasty.
