The present status of instrumentation and control (I&C) as well as automation used in nuclear power plant (NPP) in the world was surveyed in this paper. The drawbacks and deficiency resulting from the analog I&C used in the conventional NPP were described. Finally the characteristics of the modern computerized I&C and advanced main control room, and the requirements on the development of the hardware and software of computerized I&C were dissertated intensively.
