Here, the design characteristics of arch dams are introduced in detail, such as the dam form optimizing, stability against sliding of dam abutment, foundation treatment, flood discharging and energy dissipation system, concrete materials, concrete temperature control and so on, the prototype observation data are analyzed, and the safety of dam is verified. It is proved from the practice in Jiangkou dam that the ellipsoidal double-curvature arch dam has the advantages as saving concrete, curtailing engineering time limit, better stressing characteristics and so on, so it is worth spreading.
