<道德经>是道家思想的代表作,具有较高的文学成就,是中国古代文化典籍中一个具有代表性的文本.通过对<道德经>英译本的研究,可以了解中国古代哲学思想和文学艺术在英语世界的翻译、传播和接受等的情况.由于汉英语言结构的差异,<道德经>文中大量运用的排比、对偶和回文等修辞格,成为翻译的难点和研究的重点.文章选取以帛书本为源本,以世传本为参考的刘殿爵译本,通过举例分析,就该译本如何采用直译、意译和弥补等翻译方法,对原文形式进行重塑作出讨论,总结其翻译语言的艺术特点,并从中观察古籍英译的某些共同特点和现象.

Tao Te Ching, an outstanding representative of Chinese classics and a philosophical text, is not only rich in philosophical meaning, but also expressive and concise in language, which makes it a great maste- rpiece. The study of the English versions of Tao Te Ching can shed some light on the translation, diffusion and acceptance of Chinese classical philosophy and literature in the Western world. Since Tao Te Ching has a great spatial and temporal distance from the present day and Chinese and English have different language structures, it has challenged its translators. This paper makes an intensive study of D. C. Lau's translation of the Silk E- dition of Tao Te Ching, which is one of the most popular versions and considered by many scholars to be one of the most expertly translated English versions in print. The paper analyzes the translation of the typical fig- ures of speech adopted in Tao Te Ching such as parallelism, antithesis and chiasmus as well as some typical examples, evaluates its reproduction and re - creation of the original form as well as its major translation meth- ods in order to reveal some common features in such translations.
