New research progress in AB_5 rare earth-based hydrogen storage alloys is reviewed. Various methods of improving electrochemical properties were summarized with an emphasis on optimizing the chemical compositions of the alloys, controlling the microstructures, developing the second phase, surface modification and so on. Through the ways we discussed, the AB_5 type hydrogen storage alloys are lucubrated and the properties of the alloys are further improved.
