Previous research on anterolateral island flap of the lower leg is reviewed and its anatomical basis and clinical application are summarized in an attempt to investigate the pros and cons of its application in treatment of skin defect on the inferior segment of the lower leg.Some particular problems are discussed concerning optimizing the clinical application of treating the flap.
