Institute Possible changes in the response of lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin(PHA)were investigated on 20 infants with various surgical conditions. The result of incorporation of 3 H-thymidine following PHA stimulation Indicates a depression in cell immune response within 24~48 hours after operation in these infants and then it gradually recovered. Also observed was that greater blood loss and anesthesia with ether during operation could obviously affect immune functions. It is suggested that proper anesthesia procedures and agents and adequate transfusion could reduce the possible damage to the immune functions.Besides;antibiotics are necessary to prevent postoperative infections.
