The application of preservatives in cosmetics and the detecting techniques were presented in this paper.The mechanism of preservatives and cosmetic deterioration caused by micro-organism was introduced briefly.Several methods including the high-performance liquid chromatography（HPLC）,gas chromatography（GC）,thin layer chromatography（TLC）and spectrophotometry method were reported for the determination of presvrevatives in cosmetics.
