Diachronically, the animacy of the subject of a Chinese passive sentence is an evolving process. In ancient times, the subject of a Chinese passive sentence could signify an object and this phenomenon was only more popular than it is in modern Chinese. Therefore, the decline in the animacy of the Chinese passive sentence subject is a result of the evolution of Chinese, but not a sign of foreign languages or Europeanized grammatical phenomenon.
