Taking nitrogen gas as an example,suppression mechanisms of inert gas on the explosion limit and the maximum allowable oxygen content(MAOC)of liquefied petroleum gas(LPG)were researched both experimentally and theoretically. The results show that inert gas has similar effects on both MAOC and explosion limit,which can dramatically narrow the explosion limit range and MAOC range of LPG. According to the related theory,the formu-lae of caculating MAOC and explosion limit from each other are derived. In LPG-air mixture,MAOC increases with LPG concentration,while actual oxygen content of the mixture decreases with LPG concentration,both of which converge within the upper limit of MAOC. The calculation method and formulae of assessing the demand volume of inert gas for explosion suppression are proposed according to the relationship between MAOC and explosion limit.
