传统的雷州文化以儒家文化为核心，以民俗文化为载体，以地方文化为特色，是为广东岭南文化的重要组成部分；当代的雷州文化与革命文化、社会主义建设文化相融合，共同构成了当代湛江文化。湛江文化与雷州文化的关系是传承与发展的关系，雷州文化是湛江文化的基础和核心。雷州文化具有丰富的社会价值和人文精神，尤其富蕴着当代德育意义，雷州文化与湛江的革命文化和建设文化，作为独具地域特色的地方历史文化资源，历来是湛江人民用以传承传统、教育后代的宝贵精神财富和德育资源。
