郁山铝土矿区包括郁山、李村、杏树洼、煤窑洼四个矿段。含铝岩系的分布、埋深及岩相特征直接受本溪组控制。构造对含矿岩系的分布、产状、埋深及完整性等有重要的控制作用。本区在中奥陶世末上升为陆地后长期的风化剥蚀形成广阔的岩溶洼地区。到中石炭世本溪期，该区经受了由北东向南西发生海侵，出现滨海泻湖含铝岩系沉积。成矿物质主要来自中奥陶统马家沟组碳酸盐岩，经历了长期的红土化、同生再沉积、成岩、后生和表生等阶段，形成铝土矿体。
