The basic structure, working principles and development history of microbial fuel cell for treating wastewater were described. The research progresses of the achievements of the experimental conditions, treating effects and electrical power densities in recent years were summarized when microbial fuel cells were used for treating all kinds of actual organic wastewater. The bottlenecks of MFC actual application in the future were pointed out. The applications of MFC for treating actual organic wastewater were forecasted.
