《玫瑰园里的阴影》是国内外百佳短篇里一致入选的短篇小说，作者劳伦斯善于引景勾情、烘情托境的曼妙手法，在此小说中将象征主义的象征通感比拟等手法用到了极致。本文就是通过象征手法在《玫瑰园中的影子》中运用进行分析，进一步揭露虽表面上劳伦斯想要表现“生活处处皆阴影”的主题，但据此可推论出其实作者是想表明自己的立场，不是在叙述个例，而是在公开却无声的控诉战争，因它而破碎的家庭，分离的恋人绝不只出现在小说里，它的影响超乎我们的预想，甚至可以蚕食整个人类。

The Shadow of the Rose Garden is consistently popular in the world-wide selected short stories by readers. The author Lawrence King is adept in making the feeling and setting happily blended. This novel is a typical example of symbolism and synaesthesia. Through analyzing the application of symbolism in The Shadow of the Rose Garden, this article exposes the theme: Superficially, Lawrence wants to show that shadows are everywhere in the life, but in fact he wants to define his position,not to narrate, but to indict the war openly and silently--many families are broken because of it. The separation of lovers does not only in the novel, but its influence is beyond our expectations, and it can even erode the entire human race.
