页岩气是一种清洁、高效的非常规天然气资源。随着页岩气勘探开发技术的突破，美国、加拿大地区页岩气得到迅速发展，我国也在不断引进先进技术与理论，对我国多个地区进行了页岩气的选区和勘探工作。通过调查，认为江西省广泛发育下寒武统、下志留统、中二叠统富含有机质泥页岩系，具备形成页岩气的地质条件。将江西下寒武统泥页岩系与国内外页岩对比，认为江西省页岩储层地质条件较好，成藏潜力大。江西页岩气主要分布在赣东北、赣西北、萍乐坳陷、赣南地区4大潜力区，初步估算了江西页岩气地质资源量在（3.5～7.0）×1012 m 3，认为江西省页岩气资源潜力巨大，具有良好的勘探开发前景。
