This paper analyzes the semantic extension of“home (Uchi/Ie/Ka/Ke/Ya)”in Japanese, based on the view of metaphor of cognitive semantics, by using the meaning expansion network model proposed by Yōsuke Momiyama (2002). It describes the relationship between various meanings of“home”and semantic extension mechanisms, on which a polysemous system of“home”is built. In the analysis of“home”, we have found that in the process of extending the meaning, most of the meanings are generated by metonymy and metaphor or synecdoche that is based on metonymy from prototypical or semi-prototypical meaning. Metonymy is the most basic extension mechanism. In addition, the category of word meanings is very complex and it’s not possible to draw a super schema for every polysemous word. The analysis of“home”proves that the polysemous network of a polysemous word is often made up of several schemas. Metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche are important mechanisms to extend the meaning of words and connect the meanings of polysemous words.
