Hemingway%femininity%social power%fertility
The females in Hemingway’s novels on first worldwide war are different from those in the Victorian period, which is characterized by submissiveness, domesticity and passivity. Influenced by the war, economic development and the philosophy at the beginning of the 20th century, they lost their femininity. This essay, through close text analysis, explores the loss of femininity from the fol owing aspects: the females’ pursuit of social dominance;their loss of fertility and physical features of femininity, concluding that Hemingway’ s female characters have evolved into a new kind of women.
