A method for discriminating the liquefaction potential of sub-bottom sandy soils by using PCPT data is presented .The liquefaction potential of sub-bottom sandy soils at tw o platform sites in the eastern South China Sea is distinguished by using the cyclic triaxial test method and the PCPT method respectively ,and the results from these two methods are compared .It is demonstrated that the discrimination of liquefaction po-tential of sub-bottom sandy soils by using PCPT data can be feasible if the measuring method ,data acquisition ,data processing and interpretation of PCPT are know n very w ell .
