This paper addresses two problems with von Fintel’s and Gillies’ treatments of sequences of counterfactual conditionals. The most important of these concerns the interaction between counterfactuals and factual statements. Using the framework of dynamic semantics, an alternative treatment of counterfactuals is developed in this paper, and it is shown that the problems with von Fintel’s and Gillies’ theories can be solved.
