欧阳修的古文在明末清初受到了特别的推崇与钟爱，被艾南英、钱谦益等著名文人奉为楷模，风靡一时，但却由此产生了对欧文亦步亦趋的摹拟效仿之风，给当时的古文创作造成了不利的影响。有鉴于此，方苞以“义法”为衡量标准，指出欧阳修在对《史记》文法的继承上所取得成绩以及存在的问题。方苞的这种评判，旨在为欧阳修古文在自己构建的理论框架和古文文统中寻求一个相对合理的位置，也是出于建立一个既不全然复古，又不一味从俗的文统的需要。

The classic essays composed by Ouyang Xiu,much adored and admired during the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, were literally simulated and even replicated by literary celebrities, thus casting an unfavorable influence on the classic literary creation at that time. In light of the problems in literary creation, based upon the criterion called“the integration of form and content”, Fang Bao illuminated the achievements as well as inadequacies of Ouyang Xiu in the inheritance of the literary creation skills of The Historical Records by Sima Qian. Fang Bao’ criticism aims to find a niche in his own framework of literary theories and traditions for the classic essays composed by Ouyang Xiu, out of the necessity of the reconstruction of a literary creation tradition that neither restores ancient tradition nor follows the vernacular literary trend.
